Adèle Sutre is a historian who holds a PhD in geography from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, Paris).
Her research focuses on migratory trajectories and the dynamics of mobility and territorial anchoring of Romani societies around the world. Her thesis, defended in 2017 at EHESS Paris under the supervision of Marie-Vic Ozouf-Marignier, is entitled From the course of the world to its invention. Romani Geographies in North America (1880–1950). Strongly inspired by the methods of microhistory, this work is part of a global geohistory of Romani movements throughout the world. The tension between mobility and territorial anchorage is considered through the play of scales. In this perspective, it is no longer a question of thinking about a simple movement on the surface of the Earth but rather the way in which, through their practices and their representations, through their knowledge and their experiences, individuals inscribe themselves in spaces and contribute to transforming and appropriating them to make them their territories. This work is part of a double epistemological renewal, both concerning the history and geography of the Romani world in the 19th and 20th centuries and concerning theoretical reflections in geography on questions of mobility, nomadism and sedentarity. To enhance her reflection on migratory trajectories and the articulation between mobilities and anchorages, she participated as a post-doctoral fellow in the ERC project Lubartworld, which combines a transnational history perspective with a microhistorical methodology by reconstructing the individual trajectories of Jewish inhabitants in the Polish village Lubartów between the early 1920s and the early 1950s. Her research pays close attention to the role of images in the construction of representations. In 2018, she was assistant curator of the exhibition Mondes tsiganes. La fabrique des images which was held at the National Museum for Immigration History in Paris. In 2021, she published Géopolitique des Tsiganes. Her current research extends her doctoral work on the worldwide mobilities of Romani groups, particularly by focusing on the places of departure on the European continent (in particular the ports of northern Europe). She is also conducting a research project on the places and territories of assignment of populations categorized as « Travellers » in France from 1945 to today. |
